As many of you know, Burlington Sports Therapy was previously located within Evolution Training and Rehabilitation. For this week’s blog, we’d like to let our readers know about a new and unique service offered at Evolution; the Bod Pod.
A scale gives us our weight, but it doesn’t really give us good information about our body composition. That is, it tells us nothing about how much of that weight is fat tissue and how much is lean muscle. The Bod Pod gives us this information. To do the test, a person sits in an egg-shaped “pod” for a few minutes. It measures the amount of space the person takes up within the pod and can calculate a person’s lean body mass and body fat percentage. Using this information, it can estimate a person’s resting metabolic rate (which thereby gives you an estimate of your caloric requirement).
What you do with the information provided by the Bod Pod is individual. I’ve met patients who use it to tailor their strength training program, to ensure they are in fact gaining the right type of weight. I’ve met others who are primarily interested in learning about their body fat percentage and whether their diet and exercise habits are helping them attain their individual goals. I went for my first Bod Pod assessment several years ago at McMaster University. Personally, I’m competing with myself. We all know our metabolism slows with age, so I’m trying to match my level of health from “yesteryears”. I’m using the Bod Pod as a component of this health assessment.
Please keep in mind that this service is not offered at Burlington Sports Therapy and it is not officially affiliated with our clinic in any way. Similar to how I make clinical decisions with my patients, I try to let good scientific evidence guide my planning and recommendations. I like the Bod Pod because there is good scientific evidence supporting it. From my understanding, the Bod Pod has a comparable reliability to under water weighing (which was always thought as the gold standard for measuring body fat percentage). The Bod Pod is also used by the military and by numerous professional sports organizations.
